North West Guadalcanal women receive new market facility

WOMEN market vendors from North West Guadalcanal will no longer have to face the hassles they have suffered in the central market in the years past. This is because they now have one market venue of their own.

This was dealt with through the handing over of the temporary market facility from Bodo Dettke, Member of Parliament for North West Guadalcanal constituency to the women and youth of his constituency.

The issue had been reportedly lack of space for women and girls from Guadalcanal to sell their products in the Honiara Central market.

Mary Korina
Mary Korina an outspoken women representative for North West Guadalcanal thanked Dettke for preparing the temporary venue to sell their home grown products to earn money.

“Thank you Hon Dettke for this venue many times we are victimised at the Honiara Central Market and unfortunate to have our products properly placed on the tables to be sold.
“This is due to lack of space to sell our food crops and vegetables due to we have travel long distance from our villages to the main market and by the time we arrived here (central market) we are unfortunate to have spaces to display our products.

“And many times we ended up taking our products home without even selling out any,” she said.

Chairman of North West Guadalcanal Farm Association Frances Orodani urged women and youth who will be using the facility to take good care of it.

“To the women take good care of this facility, I would say that this is your early and wonderful Christmas gift that anyone could offer.

“I know your haven’t actually expected it but after 20 years you finally have one temporary market to sell your products to earn money for survival,”Orodani said.
